Manx landmarks to be lit up to raise awareness

Landmarks across the Island are to be lit up in pink this week to mark Organ Donation Week (22 - 28 September).

It's part of a campaign led by NHS Blood and Transplant which is encouraging communities to 'turn the skies pink'.

The initiative aims to raise awareness of the life-saving impact of organ donation.

On the Isle of Man, there were 14 people waiting for a transplant as of 31 August this year.

As of 13 July, there were 59,034 people residing in the Isle of Man postcode area on the UK Organ Donor Register; 58,050 registered as opt-in and 984 as opt-out (1.67 percent).

The following Isle of Man landmarks and buildings will glow pink:

  • Nobles Hospital
  • Legislative Buildings
  • Douglas City Hall, city centre, the promenade and the Tower of Refuge
  • Ramsey Town Hall, Ramsey Courthouse, Ramsey Swing Bridge
  • The Roundhouse, Braddan
  • Malew Commissioners
  • Port St Mary Town Hall

Government says the initiative 'holds particular significance as Public Health prepares to implement the Human Tissue and Organ Donation Act 2021' - aka 'Daniel's Law'.

Starting 1 January 2026, the Island will transition to a system which means that all adults will be considered potential organ donors unless they actively opt out.

Cabinet Office Minister David Ashford said: "Lighting up our Island’s landmarks in pink is a meaningful way to highlight the critical importance of organ donation.

"As we approach the introduction of deemed consent in 2026, it is essential that everyone takes the time to understand the new system and make informed decisions about their donation choice."

Chair of the Organ Donation Committee Pam Makin added: "Organ Donation Week serves as a vital reminder of how organ donation can make a profound difference to individuals and families in need. One donor can save or transform up to nine lives.

"The support of the local community and visible landmarks lighting up pink sends a strong message about our collective commitment to this life-saving cause."
