Island 'not alone' in challenges to grow economically active population

CM says Island has 'targeted' and 'focused' approach to issue

Building the economically active workforce is not just an Isle of Man issue but one being faced across the world.

That's according to the chief minister who has been questioned on proposals to grow the Island's population to 100,000 by 2037.

Tynwald's Population Rebalancing Committee queried if the methods of other jurisdictions have been considered to reach that goal.

Alfred Cannan said whilst this hasn't been done 'to a great degree' the Island will have to be 'targeted' and 'focused' to attract more people to live here:

Meanwhile, some young people on the Island believe certain job opportunities, and social activities, remain limited.

Those of school leaving age are considering their options for future careers.

One of the goals in government's proposed draft economic strategy is to build a 'larger, younger, more diverse population.'
