Jurby resident calls for government to take action
A Manx resident says the lack of support for single parents on the Isle of Man is an "emergency situation" that needs to be urgently addressed.
Daisy Green, who lives in Jurby, says her current benefits aren't enough for her to meet basic needs like heating and providing hot meals for her child.
The 24-year-old currently relies on charities to make ends meet and says she's struggled to find a job despite having qualifications.
"We've done everything we can to my budget, it's just simply not enough. Rural communities are just left, isolated, and we're drowning, we're starving."
She's calling for government to take action to help those facing poverty:
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Keys says poverty on the Island needs to be tackled "as a matter of priority".
Juan Watterson previously chaired a Tynwald committee looking into the issue with the panel calling for the benefits system to be reformed.
"No one should be in that position in the 21st Century, in an economy like the Isle of Man, where they are struggling to put food on the table."
