The Island's first compulsory registration scheme for private housing landlords has moved a step forward.
A bill drawn up by the Department of Social Care to ensure basic minimum standards in thousands of rented properties will begin its passage through the Keys this spring.
A public consultation's been launched on the proposals and, in the meantime, landlords are being urged to sign up to a voluntary registration scheme.
The bill would allow the department to enforce minimum standards and give tenants whose landlords refuse to upgrade shoddy accommodation official recourse for the first time.
