Garff, Port Erin and Peel the latest to publish their increases

Ratepayers in Garff, Port Erin and Peel will have to find more money to pay their rates.

The local authorities are the latest to announce increases for the next financial year.

Garff Commissioners are increasing rates by seven percent.

The local authority has blamed the hike on plans to replace old streetlights, provision for additional costs at the two civic amenity sites and the need to budget for the Local Authority Elections in April which are likely to cost around £21,000.

The commissioners say they've also taken into account the 'volatility' of interest levels and inflation.

Peel Commissioners are setting rates at 272 pence in the pound which is an increase of two pence from last year.

The refuse rate will also be increased by £6 to £263 per household.

Last year the general rate was set at 270 pence in the pound and the refuse rate was £257.

The increase to the general rate is about 1.5 percent more than the previous year.

Port Erin Commissioners is increasing its rates by 1.85 percent for the next financial year.

They will be set at 385 pence in the pound which is an increase of 16p per week for a typical three-bed house in the village.

The commissioners say the budget provides ‘further investment’ for work including various streetlighting schemes, improvement within Athol Glen and addressing the landslips on the Raad ny Foillan.

The local authority has also agreed to release more than £33,000 from reserves to pay for some of the planned expenditure.

Last year rates were set at 378 pence in the pound.

The announcements follow those of fellow local authorities Castletown - which is hiking rates to 398 pence in the pound - and Onchan which is increasing its rates to 431 pence in the pound.

This marks a four percent rise.
