Number of boats allowed to fish now limited
Limiting the number of boats which can fish for king scallops in Manx territorial waters will ensure the Isle of Man has a profitable fishery ‘for many years to come’.
That’s the view of the Manx Fish Producers Association which has welcomed a new long-term management plan.
The king scallop season will start on Tuesday (1 November) - a maximum of 55 boats will be allowed to fish with more than half of those Manx vessels.
Dr David Beard is the association’s chairman – he says the change is the culmination of a long negotiating process:
