Manx Care is encouraging women on the Depo-Provera injection to consult their GP if there are any concerns about it.

It follows news in the UK this week relating to a study published in 2024 which identified an increase in the risk of meningioma, which is mainly associated with long-term use.

In a statement, Executive Medical Director Dr Chris Stockport says it is important to emphasise that meningiomas are uncommon, typically slow-growing, and in the vast majority of cases non-cancerous, with effective treatments available.

"For the vast majority of women, the overall risk remains very low, and many will continue to use this form of contraception safely. There is no change to current advice to stop treatment routinely.

"We would strongly encourage any woman who has questions or concerns to speak with her GP, or primary healthcare provider. They can offer personalised advice and, where appropriate, discuss the full range of safe and effective contraceptive options available.

"Our priority is to ensure women feel informed, reassured and supported to choose the option that is right for them.”
