Manx dancer, teacher and festival organiser 'in awe' at RBV win

Juan Garrett named as the Reih Bleeaney Vanannan for 2026

A well-known dancer and teacher from the Island has been recognised for his over forty years of 'outstanding contribution to Manx culture'.

Juan Garrett, who is also the founder and chairman of Shennaghys Jiu Celtic festival, is this year's recipient of the Reih Bleeaney Vanannan award.

Nominations praised his 'exceptional, continuous, and deeply influential contribution to Manx culture'.

A talented solo dancer, group leader and choreographer, Juan has been involved with Manx culture since he was a child, performing and stewarding at festivals such as Yn Chruinnaght, participating in community events around the Island, and performing spectacularly choreographed shows internationally.
His name has long been synonymous with Ny Fennee, Ramsey’s dynamic and innovative traditional dance group since its founding in 1980.
As one of the key leaders within the group, Juan has shown the energy to train successive cohorts of young dancers to the very highest standards, showcasing Manx culture at festivals in Galicia, Brittany, Ireland, Cornwall, as well as across the Island.

Presenting body Culture Vannin say 'the legacy he has built is one that continues to ripple outward' and 'his influence is felt across generations'.

But speaking to Manx Radio after receiving the award, Juan in turn credited those who influenced him:

The Reih Bleeaney Vanannan or Manannan’s Choice of the Year is the Isle of Man’s highest cultural honour, awarded by Culture Vannin, and decided by a selection panel made up of representatives from Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh, Yn Chruinnaght, Manx National Heritage, IOM Arts Council and Culture Vannin itself.

Juan was presented with the medal at a private gathering at Ramsey Town Hall, along with £500 prize money.

He nominated Ny Fennee Manx dance group for a further donation of £500.
