50% drop mirrors the UK
The number of students studying modern languages on the Island is at a new record low, a Manx Radio freedom of information request can reveal.
Last month, the BBC reported a 50% decrease of language learning across the UK.
Figures now released by the Department of Education on the Isle of Man show a very similar situation is happening here.
In 2011, there were over 500 year 11 students taking a language at GCSE level, these include German, French and Spanish at the respective high schools.
That number now is just shy of 250 for the next school year commencing in 2020 - a decline of almost half of what it was 9 years ago.
The story is much the same with A Level figures.
Following the high of 32 four years ago, that number now stands at just 15.
