It's been confirmed a Peel man who's spent several years helping to clear unexploded bombs and devices in Ukraine has been killed, .

Christopher Garrett, an armed forces veteran, had been working with the humanitarian charity Prevail Together, of which he was chairman.

The charity issued a statement this morning saying Mr Garrett had been severely injured alongside other members in an incident yesterday (6 May) in Izyum, a city in eastern Ukraine. 

In a statement since, Prevail board member Shaun Pinner, a fellow armed forces veteran, says: 'Following up on my previous message: it has now been confirmed that two of the three critically injured individuals have sadly passed away. 

'I can confirm that Chris was among those who died. 

'Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected.

'We deeply appreciate all the support during this difficult time. Prevail will share further updates as soon as we coordinate with the investigation teams over the next 48hrs. We can’t and will not comment during an ongoing investigation.'

Mr Garret had been involved in providing 'mine risk education, clearance training, and support to military, police, and emergency services on and off the front line' in Ukraine since 2014.

He spoke to Manx Radio in April 2022, following Russia's invasion.

Since the announcement of his death, a number of tributes have been paid to Chris online, many thanking him for his unwavering dedication to Ukraine.

Karolina Davison, a trustee for the charity Manx Support for Ukraine, says Chris was 'a true hero and friend'.
