Manx Missile 'hugely disappointed'
Mark Cavendish says he is ‘hugely disappointed’ after having to withdraw from next month’s Commonwealth Games.
The ‘Manx Missile’ crashed heavily in the Milan-San Remo race last Saturday – his third crash in recent months.
This afternoon (Friday) the 32 year-old has confirmed he will not be able to compete for Team Isle of Man on the Gold Coast.
The multiple Tour de France stage-winner sustained a broken rib and ankle injury in the crash.
Cavendish says while it’s ‘ultimately positive news’ there’s been no serious long-term damage, the Games will be too soon for him to compete.
He says he’s immensely proud to represent the Isle of Man and was looking forward to a successful event with the team. He’s thanking Andrew Roche and the whole team for their support and says he’ll be proudly supporting them from home.
Although no specific time frame has been pencilled in for a return, Cavendish hopes to be back racing within a matter of weeks, rather than months, but will take all the time needed to return to full fitness.
He’s thanking all those who wished him well following last weekend’s crash.
