Could the public’s view on taxes, rates and charges be changed by having an open discussion on how the government makes money?
West Douglas MHK Chris Thomas thinks so – but his motion to set up an inquiry into government revenue failed to be seconded in Tynwald this week.
Mr Thomas says he’s disappointed his idea - which would have seen the public, voluntary organisations and businesses have their say on taxes, rates and other charges – didn’t spark any debate in court.
And he says an open forum could have been a useful tool for government:
