Judicial role a Crown not Tynwald appointment
Tynwald should play no part in appointing a Manx Judge of Appeal.
The Chief Minister told the Court today (16 May) it should 'divorce' itself from Crown appointments - positions such as the Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor and Deemsters.
East Douglas MHK Chris Robertshaw had asked why politicians weren't informed the post of appeal judge was vacant, and that it had become a full-time role, open to candidates from the Manx Bar.
He said while Tynwald doesn't make the appointment, it is responsible for the judicial framework.
The Chief Minister added it was a transparent recruitment where the successful candidate is chosen by the Queen, on the recommendation of a selection panel.
