MHK welcomes support for adding more companies to FoI act

Proposals still subject to combined vote in January

An MHK has welcomed the support for including three additional publicly-owned companies in the Freedom of Information Act.

Douglas Central member Chris Thomas gained backing from the House of Keys for all such entities to be covered by FoI legislation, although a combined vote will be needed next month after MLCs voted against the move.

Because the branches weren't in agreement, an extra vote will be needed in January. MHKs voted 13-10 in favour, while MLCs were 3-2 against.

Mr Thomas is keen to see the public able to request details from the Steam Packet Company, Manx Development Corporation and Isle of Man Meats.

He'd also called for Manx Radio to be removed from the act, but this was not supported by the Manx parliament.

Mr Thomas told Manx Radio this was "just a debating point", stating that if Manx Radio is included, why wouldn't larger companies by covered by the act.
