Planners grant green light to refurbish the site

Confirmation that plans to redevelop the historic Newson's building on North Quay in Douglas has been met with mixed reaction.

Planning approval has been granted on the condition that measures are taken to preserve the former warehouse's character.

The building has faced numerous obstacles over the years with planners facing scrutiny over multiple rejections.

But opinions differ on what should become of one of the harbour’s oldest buildings:

In a statement on social media, chair of the planning committee Rob Callister said:

"Back in November 2023, I was nervous about taking over as Chair of the Planning Committee.

"However, over the past couple of years, I’ve genuinely enjoyed having an input and a say in the redevelopment of the island for future generations.

"The role can be challenging at times, and I normally spend most weekends before a public sitting of the Planning Committee drafting notes, going through the agenda, or reviewing previous applications relating to particular sites that have been approved or rejected.

"The planning application relating to Numbers 27 and 28 on Douglas' North Quay (the Newson’s site) meant I spent most of Saturday afternoon researching and reading various applications and submissions.

"It was a very finely balanced decision today. On one hand, it was great to see Number 27 North Quay being refurbished, but unfortunately, Number 28 North Quay couldn’t saved.

"I think most people have walked around North Quay over the past few years, and judging by the comments I’ve seen this evening, most appear to be in favour of the planning decision made today.

"So, it was an absolute pleasure to support that decision this morning as Chair.

"I’m certainly looking forward to seeing the transformation of North Quay, Douglas, over the next couple of years."
