New Biosphere artist in residence announced

Second artist to take up the role

The Manx Wildlife Trust has announced this year's UNESCO 'Biosphere Artist in Residence'.

Island-based graphic artist Ali Hodgson has been selected as the second artist to take up the role.

The yearlong post, in partnership with UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man and funded by Isle of Man Arts Council, started this month. 

The post aims to connect new audiences with nature and to enable them to enjoy culture and the arts.

It is hoped the residency will continue the great work of the inaugural artist in residence, Clare Payne, who completed her residency earlier this year. 

Ali Hodgson said: "It’s a real privilege to be selected as the next Biosphere Artist in Residence. 

"For me, it brings together so many aspects of my practice, bridging my background as both an illustrator and a communication designer rooted in social and ecological design principles.

"I want to use the residency as an opportunity to take our Island’s movement towards sustainability beyond its current cultural and economic narrative, exploring and introducing some of the principles of ‘regenerative culture’ with a specific focus on our unique flora and fauna and their interconnections with each other and ourselves. We have lots of plans for the coming year so watch this space!”

Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Clare Barber, who is vice-chair of UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man, said: "The artist in residence is a great way to reach and engage new audiences on issues facing the natural world. 

"I wish Ali well for the year ahead and I hope her design skills will encourage more people to connect with, care for and act for nature in our UNESCO Biosphere."
