Callister considering it as part of housing plan
Houses in multiple occupation - or HMOs - could be licensed in future to ensure minimum standards.
That’s the view of the new housing and communities minister.
A number of former guest houses on the Island have been converted into accommodation; under current rules they must be registered by the local authority.
Government will inspect and offer advice and assistance throughout the registration process; but Rob Callister says legislation could be strengthened further.
He's been setting out his early priorities for tackling housing pressures on the Island:
Mr Callister told Manx Radio he hopes to make progress on the issue within his first six months in office, alongside plans for a national housing strategy, action on empty and dilapidated properties, and a homelessness strategy.
The Onchan MHK says government needed to move beyond research and data collection towards practical outcomes, with departments and external organisations working together to increase housing supply and improve standards.
