A new proposal for a replacement diesel locomotive is being considered by the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure.
Last month Tynwald approved funding of £350,000 to purchase a second-hand unit from Romania, after plans to spend more than twice as much to purchase a new loco met with opposition and were scaled down.
However, it's now emerged that an American company has submitted a proposal matching the revised specifications.
Minister Graham Cregeen says the new deal potentially offers better value, quicker delivery and much improved long term support for maintenance and it’s prudent that all proposals are carefully considered to deliver the best possible value and quality for the taxpayer.
No final decision has yet been made, but if the deal was accepted the cost would remain within the funds approved by Tynwald.
