Douglas Borough Council's 2,500 housing tenants are to be issued with new rent cards.
The wallet-sized plastic cards will come into use from April, for people making payments at the town hall.
Chairman of the Public Health and Housing Committee Colin Cain hopes they will provide a more efficient system, and expects savings of around £2,000 as individual rent books will no longer have to be printed.
Tenants will still be able to make their rent payments by direct debit, by telephone using a debit card, in cash, online at douglas.gov.im or by cheque.
