Regular inspections will continue but re-grading work not necessary at this time

The Department of Infrastructure has intervened to calm concerns raised by some boat owners in Laxey that no harbour basin clearance work is planned ahead of the summer season.

In a statement to Manx Radio, the department says Laxey Harbour is frequently inspected and it doesn't consider re-grading work to be necessary at this time.

However, regular inspections will continue and work completed as and when necessary.

The DoI insists that routine maintenance is planned this year, including emptying the harbour's stone trap, which stops river debris from flowing into the sea.

As part of the process samples are taken from the substrate and analysis carried out for particle size and the presence of various chemicals to help determine how the material can be safely re-cycled or disposed of.

Seaweed can also be an issue in the harbour at Laxey, though the DoI says it's not its general responsibility to remove it.

However, action would be considered if it was seen to affect navigation, safety and harbour operations.
