Prescriptions budget almost £18m last year
The Department of Health and Social Care spent almost £18 million on NHS prescriptions during the last year - 90% of which were free of charge.
The figures have been released as the department rolls out an awareness campaign to try and ensure those who should pay a small fee towards their prescription, do so.
The laws to show proof of exemption from prescription have been in place for some time - with those classified as exempt receiving medication free of charge, whilst those who aren't pay £3.85 towards the £9-plus average cost of each item.
However, Pharmaceutical Adviser for the DHSC, Maria Bell, is keen to stress no-one will be refused medication from their pharmacist - even if they CAN'T show proof they're exempt from prescription charges.
