A Peel man has escaped an immediate custodial sentence, after admitting punching another man onto a table full of glasses during a fight.
Forty-eight-year-old Anthony Mark Barrow, of Douglas Road, was given a five-month prison sentence, suspended for a year, by Deemster Doyle at a Court of General Gaol.
Barrow assaulted Ian Lovegrove last October at the Peveril Hotel in Peel, causing actual bodily harm.
Linda Watt, prosecuting, said that following a disagreement between the pair, Mr Lovegrove pushed Barrow, who retaliated by punching him onto a table containing glasses.
Mr Lovegrove sustained cuts and serious lacerations, as well as facial injuries from being punched, and was taken to hospital and detained overnight.
The defendant's advocate said Barrow had been provoked by Mr Lovegrove who had been drinking.
He said there was no questiopn of 'glassing' - the lacerations were caused by being pushed onto the table.
Deemster Doyle told Barrow that violence should not, and would not, be tolerated, and ordered him to pay £200 compensation.
"We think it's inhumane the way he was treated."
