The general election is on Thursday 24 September

Around 40 residents in Glenfaba and Peel have outlined what they want to see from the next government.

Organised by Lulu Gillow, Janet Bridle and Nigel Comely, the meeting at Peel Centenary Centre followed similar events in Port St Mary and Douglas.

A different take on traditional pre-election meetings, there was no input from candidates, though several were in attendance, as members of the public discussed what changes they would like to make.

In amongst the usual topics of government expenditure and getting people and produce on and off the Island, the potential voters discussed what more can be done to support first time buyers, the need for actions not words on affordable housing and what tools government has to ensure developers are building homes fit for the Island's current needs.

There was also discussions on immigration, the cost of living, supporting local producers, the economy, tourism and supporting the Island's heritage.

Other big topics that drew calls for action from the residents were the lack of social care in the west of the Island, Manx Care and the ever thorny issue of parking.

A perhaps surprising big topic was reform to the structure of government which several people said is inefficient and unfit for the Island's needs, leads to a lack of joined up thinking from departments and a lack of accountability when mistakes are made.

Speaking after the event, Lulu and Janet said they were pleased with the turnout and that they may explore a meeting in the north of the Island before the election if there is sufficient interest.
