Concept unsafe claims Lord Holmes
A UK peer says plans for a £7 million revamp of Douglas Promenade should ditch the “shared space” concept after a report he produced claimed they were unsafe.
Lord Holmes of Richmond surveyed 600 people across the UK – and found two-thirds of people disliked them, while a third actively avoided them.
The Department of Infrastructure’s plans would see horse trams, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists sharing the promenade with few or no road markings and safety features.
Lord Holmes says his research suggests accidents in such areas are under-reported, and he’s calling for a moratorium on them in the UK:
