A group of animal fosterers on the Isle of Man is petitioning for domestic animals to be reclassified as sentient beings, and not property
In its current form, the Manx Animal Welfare Legislation recognises them as property or objects.
"What do you mean they are classed as property. They are living, breathing creatures."
This, the group says, is not safe for domestic pets who may be in abusive homes, adding that animals can sense and feel just like humans.
Chanelle Sukhoo spoke to petitioners Andi and Pete Nolan, Lee and Christine Williamson and Beth Tasker:
Manx Radio has contacted the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture for a response.
