A pioneering rehabilitation programme for those suffering from strokes is being piloted in the Isle of Man.
Strokes are the result of a disturbance of blood supply to the brain, resulting in loss of function and patients can experience a wide range of symptoms such as paralysis, unsteadiness and communication difficulties.
Now, in association with the Manx Stroke Foundation, Ward 7 at Nobles Hospital is undertaking a 12 month test as a specialist unit for the treatment and care of patients in the period immediately following a stroke.
The staff on the ward have undertaken training in therapeutic handling, a technique which aims to restore as much independence as possible through development of muscular tension for movement.
