Treasury Minister withdrew proposals following criticism from Tynwald members

An MHK says proposals that would have seen self-employed people made ineligible for Employed Persons Allowance were 'unjust and shortsighted'.

Douglas East's Joney Faragher was one of a number of members to criticise the plans in this month's sitting of Tynwald.

Treasury Minister Alex Allinson went on to withdraw the plans following comments that the move would disproportionately affect women and single parents, and could force those who work part time to quit work altogether.

The benefit is designed to support to parents, disabled workers and other individuals on low incomes.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Keys says proposals to stop self-employed people being able to claim Employed Persons Allowance could have been a "lose-lose" situation.
