The man who murdered police woman Fiona Bone, whose parents live in the south of the Island, could face a whole-life sentence under new plans being unveiled in the UK.
Home Secretary Theresa May says those who kill police officers should face compulsory whole life sentences.
She today (Wednesday) unveiled the proposals to officers at the Police Federation conference in Bournemouth.
Dale Cregan has admitted killing the officer, who went to school on the Island, in a gun and grenade attack in September last year.
Currently, those who commit a police murder face minimum sentences of 30 years in jail.
Dale Cregan is on trial on other charges which is continuing at Preston Crown Court.
