Police not aware of 'risks or threats' to General Election candidates

Police say they want to reassure all candidates standing in the General Election that they are not aware of any ‘risks, threats or targeting of individuals’ as a result of their candidacy.

It follows damage caused to two campaign signs belonging to a prospective MHK in the north of the Island.

The Isle of Man Constabulary says it is investigating the criminal damage and initial evidential assessments have not identified any clear evidence to indicate it was caused by a firearm.

Investigating officers are therefore pursuing a number of alternative lines of enquiry to establish the circumstance around the damage and the most likely cause.

In a statement provided to Manx Radio a spokesperson added: "A range of investigative activities is being undertaken to gather evidence, eliminate potential hypotheses, and ensure that all viable lines of enquiry are thoroughly assessed before any conclusions are reached.

"The constabulary is working closely with the victim, providing appropriate support and ensuring they are kept fully updated as the investigation progresses.

"The Isle of Man Constabulary wishes to reassure the public and all election candidates that it is not aware of any risks, threats or targeting of individuals as a result of their candidacy in the forthcoming election."
