The Isle of Man has seen a 5.5 per cent rise in its population over the last five years, and a 5.8 per cent increase in those working.
At the same time, the number of people who classed themselves as unemployed and looking for work on their census forms went up by nearly 50 per cent, compared to 2006.
Residents filled in their forms on March 27, when there were 84,497 people living on the Island.
Those figures are included in provisional census data which has been released by the Manx government.
The 5.5 per cent increase equates to a further 4,439 people, made up of 2,448 men and 1,991 women.
According to the data, the number of people in work stood at 43,132 and jobless total went up from 1,010 in 2006 to 1,475 this year.
The 2011 total is significantly higher than the official government unemployment figure of 891 for March, although that is calculated using different criteria.
