Damage mars start of new term at Willaston
The head of an Island school says children and staff are demoralised after vandals struck.
Extensive damage was caused at Willaston Primary during the summer holidays.
It included three windows being smashed, fence posts being broken, vandalism to outdoor classroom decking and equipment and considerable graffiti.
Head Rose Burton says the children and staff returning after the break are very upset much of their work has been destroyed.
CCTV has been studied to identify those responsible.
Mrs Burton says young children have had their learning experiences restricted as some equipment is no longer safe – something she describes as ‘incredibly demoralising’ after so much hard work went into making the school a welcoming place.
Hours of CCTV footage has been assessed and she’s encouraged so many children enjoyed the facilities during the holidays before a small minority of people caused the damage.
Alongside head of the nearby Cronk-y-Berry Primary School, Mrs Burton will invite young people from the community into school to discuss the issue over the next few weeks.
She says the main focus is to understand why it happened and identify practical solutions to avoid a repeat.
