Residents must vacate for kitchen refits
Sheltered housing residents in Douglas are contesting kitchen refits - because it means being turfed out of their homes for up to two weeks.
Douglas council says it needs to carry out major refurbishment work at Waverley Court, to ensure the complex remains sustainable.
But it will mean residents vacating their homes as winter starts, and many are unhappy at the disruption.
The council wants to change the layout of living areas at Waverley Court, to create open plan kitchen/lounge areas.
It will mean the removal of a wall, and for some, the ripping out of new kitchens residents had recently installed at their own expense.
Tenants, many of them pensioners, say they've not had a response to their objections, and have contacted constituency MHK Clare Bettison.
The East Douglas MHK has posed a series of questions to councillor Claire Wells, on choices offered to residents on the new layout, and whether there was any opportunity to have a say on the scheme as a whole.
The council says it will provide help with temporaray relocation on request, and has given firm dates for competition of the work.
