Commissioners agree rise in line with inflation
Ramsey Town Commissioners have suggested public sector rents should go up, to save tenants facing a dramatic rise further down the line.
The local authority has agreed to put forward a 2.5% increase, in line with current rates of inflation.
If adopted, tenants in a three bedroom house would see an additional £2.60 added to their weekly rents
It follows an invitation by the Department of Infrastructure for local authorities to suggest an 'appropriate rise' in rents. Despite this, DOI bosses will make the ultimate decision on whether rents go up.
Three Ramsey Commissioners were opposed to a rise, but the resolution passed eight votes to three at a meeting held this week.
The local authority has a deficit of over £1.12 million in operating its 553 properties, which is met via government grant.
The Board says an inflationary increase will ensure funds are available for maintenance and administration, and to 'keep pace with rising costs'.
