Repair work on 133-year-old structure completed

Ramsey's historic Swing Bridge is expected to fully re-open later today.

It follows the completion of work to repair a section of carriageway on the 133-year-old structure.

It's been closed to vehicular traffic since January for safety reasons, but has remained open for cyclists and pedestrians.

Repair work has been carried out by specialist contractors working with the Department of Infrastructure.

The DOI says'The bridge was constructed in 1892 by the Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Company. It is the only structure of its type on the island and, as a unique asset, the Department of Infrastructure is committed to ensuring that it is maintained accordingly.'

'The bridge deck is constructed from timber members spanning between steel sections and covered with a mastic asphalt road surface.

'The bridge had been closed because part of the asphalt failed, leading to water penetration resulting in rot in a number of the timber decking members.

'Following the discovery of this void in January 2025 the bridge was closed to vehicular traffic for safety reasons, however it remained open at all times to pedestrians and cyclists.

'There were rumours that the bridge would be closed to vehicles permanently. We are pleased to report that's not the case.'
