Major Paul Crebbin served with the Royal Marines

Manx National Heritage has acquired a historically significant 18th-century oil portrait of a young Manxman at the start of his military career with the Royal Marines.

Major Paul Crebbin was painted by the acclaimed artist Arthur William Devis and the portrait has joined the national collection thanks to funding support from the Manx Lottery Trust’s Dormant Assets Programme.

Major Crebbin, believed to be just 17 years old when the portrait was painted, went on to serve with distinction in both the American War of Independence and the Napoleonic Wars.

MNH says his remarkable story is preserved not only in the newly acquired painting but also in a surviving personal letter, offering a first-hand account of his experiences during this pivotal period in world history.

The Royal Marines Museum has described the portrait as "extremely rare", with the combination of Crebbin’s image and personal writings making it an exceptional addition to the Isle of Man’s national collection.

Following expert conservation at the studios of Critchlow and Kukkonen in Sheffield, the painting is now on display in the Temporary Exhibition Gallery at the Manx Museum.

Conservation work included careful cleaning, retouching, and re-lining the canvas to repair substantial tears, one of which was reportedly caused by a sword thrust.

Matthew Richardson, Curator for Manx National Heritage, says: "The painting was acquired by our charity on generous terms from Major Crebbin’s descendants. It is a powerful and inspiring addition to the national collection, capturing a young Manxman at the start of a distinguished military career while connecting us to history through his own words."

The portrait will be shown in the Mann at War Gallery in Spring 2026.

Sarah Kelly, Chairman of the Manx Lottery Trust, says: "Supporting the preservation of our Island’s rich and unique heritage is central to our mission.

"We’re proud to play a part in bringing this rare and meaningful artwork into public care, where it will help tell the stories of those who shaped, and were shaped by, the Isle of Man."

The Temporary Exhibition Gallery at the Manx Museum is open daily from 9.30am to 4.30pm, with free admission, offering visitors the chance to view the portrait and explore the personal history of one of the Isle of Man’s most significant military figures.
