Unlikely material will now be dumped at sea
Infrastructure chiefs look set to abandon a proposal to dump contaminated silt from Peel inner harbour at sea.
It was among options presented in a DoI report to Tynwald this month, until a land-based site for what's called 'problematic waste' is agreed.
The suggestion sounded an alarm for Manx fish producers, who said build-up of heavy metal contaminants in the sediment could seriously harm the fishery, if dumped at sea.
Specialists from the DoI and DEFA have since analysed silt samples from the marina, and it's now thought unlikely the material will be disposed of at sea.
If the idea is dropped, the DoI says a short-term solution will be found instead.
