Recycling boxes come into use

The Isle of Man’s first large scale kerbside recycling collections begin this morning.

Over the past few weeks, two recycling boxes have been delivered to 15,000 eligible properties in Douglas, Onchan and Braddan, along with an explanatory leaflet, collection calendar and fridge magnet.

Each home has received a green box with an elasticated net cover, for glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans, and plastic bottles.

There is also a blue box, with a shower-proof cover, for newspapers, magazines and junk-mail.

The scheme is a partnership between the Department of Local Government and the Environment, Douglas Corporation, and Braddan and Onchan Commissioners.

The recycling boxes will be collected fortnightly, with no extra charge to ratepayers.

Today’s collections will take place in Onchan and Manx Radio be at the home of an Onchan ratepayer during Mandate, to find out what the new scheme involves.

The programme, starting at 7.30am, will also include an interview with the department’s recycling manager Stephanie Gray.
