Language icon died in December 1974
Tributes are being paid to the Manx cultural figure Ned Maddrell, who died 43 years ago today.
The Cregneash fisherman and, latterly, museum curator, is most widely remembered for being the last native speaker of Manx Gaelic.
A meeting with Taoiseach Eamonn de Valera in 1947 promtped the Irish government to make important archive recordings of what was then a rapidly-declining language.
The landmark ocassion was commemorated at this year's Tynwald Day.
