Castletown could become a 20 miles an hour town.
The Department of Transport has approved a request from the local commissioners, who want the restriction to apply in all residential areas.
The matter will now go out for consultation.
At their monthly board meeting this week, commissioners spoke of their delight at the department’s support, with many stressing existing 20 mph zones around the town were fragmented.
If the limit became law, it would not apply to through roads, such as Victoria Road and Alexandra Road.
