Resident's frustration at 'private campsite' on Douglas Promenade 

Concerns about whether part of Douglas Promenade is being used as a ‘private campsite’ have been elevated to the police, council and government.

It’s after a number of motorhomes seemingly set up camp over the Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT period.

It’s claimed they parked their motorbikes on the promenade walkway and set out furniture including tables and chairs as an 'extension of their private living area'.

“This is not simply a question of whether there is technically enough space for someone to squeeze past. Parking vehicles on the pavement obstructs the pedestrian route and seriously inconveniences pedestrians, particularly vulnerable people.” - Queens Apartments’ resident

A resident from Queens Apartments has written a letter to the relevant authorities saying the obstruction they are causing - on the designated pedestrian footpath - is a public safety issue.

Manx Radio’s Chanelle Sukhoo has been speaking to her:

“What is happening here has now gone far beyond a question of parking or visitor inconvenience. It has become a public safety, accessibility, environmental and enforcement issue in the centre of our capital city.” - Queens Apartments’ resident

In her letter the resident asks whether ‘ordinary rules’ governing public highways, pedestrian access, cleanliness and responsible use of public space should be ‘enforced consistently’.  

She has asked for government and the local authority to take ‘immediate physical enforcement action’ rather than relying on informal or advisory warnings.

Manx Radio has invited the police to respond.

In a statement, Douglas Council says the council's community and enforcement team is working in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure to encourage visitors to use one of the campsites.

"Rather than issue fixed penalty notices, it will always strive to inform visitors and wardens are placing information notices on the bikes and making visits each day this week.

 "In partnership with the DoI, the Council will next year look to purchase signage so it is clear no camping and/or camper vans are allowed."
