Results of agricultural survey to be sent to prospective MHKs

Farmers recognised for contribution to Manx countryside

The Manx countryside is seen as an essential part of the Island’s identity, wellbeing, environment, community and resilience by the people who live here.

They're some of the key findings from a public survey held at this summer's agricultural shows.

The Farming Wildlife Advisory Group asked attendees, "what does the countryside means to you?", in a survey supported by the Manx National Farmer's Union.

The FWAG say the responses show that 'for many people, the countryside provides peace, freedom, space, fresh air and an escape from the pressures of everyday life, supporting both mental and physical health. 

'It’s beauty, wildlife, biodiversity, farmland, hedgerows and changing seasons create a strong sense of place and pride in being Manx.'

They added: "There is also a clear understanding that the countryside is a living and working landscape.  

"Farmers are frequently recognised as custodians who produce food, maintain the landscape and provide habitats for wildlife.  

"Food production and food security are seen as increasingly important to the Island’s resilience and future."

As a result, the group is calling on the upcoming crop of MHKs to value our Island's farmers.

They say they will be sharing the responses with all candidates.
