Ronaldsway Airport was closed this morning (Sunday) as the latest wave of volcanic ash from Iceland was blown over the Isle of Man.
UK National Air Traffic Services closed UK airspace above the Island shortly before 7.30am.
It was hoped Ronaldsway could remain open until mid-morning, but the area of high density ash arrived earlier than expected.
Airport director Anne Reynolds said another update would be issued around lunchtime, but it wasn't looking good for the rest of the day (play audio file):
Manx2.com cancelled all its flights for the day and the company had extra staff on its reservations desk from 10.30am to help people rearrange their flights.
The suspension of flights meant there was no delivery of Sunday papers to the Island. They should have been flown in this morning as the Ben my Chree wasn't operating last night.
The 'ashes' have also stumped Castletown cricket team, which was due to fly to Liverpool this morning to play Lancashire team Farnworth.
It's now hoped the match can be rearranged for a later date.
