Manx Care inviting pregnant women and elderly for appointments
A respiratory syncytial virus vaccine programme has started on the Island, looking to protect infants and elderly people.
Manx Care says RSV, though relatively unknown among the public, infects around 90 percent of children under the age of two.
RSV typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms.
However Manx Care says it can lead to severe lung infections like pneumonia and infant bronchiolitis and is a leading cause of infant mortality globally.
The programme includes:
- a vaccine for pregnant women over 28 weeks to help protect their newborn babies
- a routine programme for those over 75
- a catch-up campaign for people aged 75 to 79.
Those eligible will be invited to attend an appointment.
