A faulty light fitting in the basement gym of the Sefton caused the hotel to be evacuated in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Fire crews were called out just after twenty to one.
They found the gym filled with smoke, but there was no fire.
Staff and guests at the hotel were alerted by the main fire alarm and spent about half an hour in the foyer before being allowed back to their work and rooms respectively.
