The deaths of three stevedores on board the Isle of Man registered bulk carrier Berge Mawson in 2022 was a stark reminder that the marine industry still has much work to do to mitigate the hazards posed by noxious atmospheres.
That's the view of Captain Andrew Moll, the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch's Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents.
Writing in the 2022 MAIB annual report, Captain Moll says he will have more to say in the investigation report currently being carried out on behalf of the Isle of Man Ship Registry.
The stevedores were in the cargo hold of the 92,000 tonne Manx registered bulk carrier, Berge Mawson, during an operation to load coal at the Bunyu anchorage in Indonesia in July last year.

In his report Captain Moll says the stevedores had entered the space before access control was restored. He added that it was not the first time stevedores had been caught out in this fashion.
