'Significant dredging works' in Douglas Harbour

Talks taking place over mitigation measures as sailing schedule disrupted

The Harbours Division is said to be in 'ongoing discussions' with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company regarding harbour depths at Douglas.

Earlier this week the ferry operator altered its sailing timetable amidst what it described as 'ongoing dredging issues' in the capital's port.

A build up of sediment in the harbour has caused issues for the Steam Packet in recent times, with Manxman grounding on a 'high level of mud' in March last year.

A Department of Infrastructure says the Division and the operator are in talks about planned mitigation measures.

In a statement, the Department says a quotation has been issued for significant dredging works, which are anticipated to be completed by the end of the month. 

The Department says it has also upgraded the navigation systems on its harbour vessel and is progressing enhanced survey arrangements to support ongoing monitoring.

Work is also said to be continuing on the business case for a future capital dredge of Douglas Harbour with 'the relevant paper progressing through the appropriate approval processes'.

The Department of Infrastructure says it will continue to work closely with Steam Packet to support 'safe and reliable harbour operations'.
