The new facility will help to grow the business
A farm in Peel has applied for planning permission to rebuild an agricultural barn that was destroyed by fire.
In January 2023, the barn at Staarvey Farm caught alight due to weather conditions.
According to a planning statement submitted with the application, before the fire, concrete floors and doors were added to the building to provide rest areas and washrooms for an increasing workforce.
In addition, a preserves business was due to move in.
Since then, the statement says, the family has used temporary buildings to house a packing room and chiller and had to stop the preserves business.
It further states that, now the family is in a better position, it would like to replace the barn so that all farm activities can fully recommence.
The new barn will house a salad-picking area, walk-in chiller, delivery preparation area, farm workshop and kitchen, as well as the preserves business.
It will also provide storage, a staff restroom and changing area, and a farm office.
“We desperately need the barn in order to operate efficiently and effectively and to continue to grow the business.” – Staarvey Farms
The application adds that the farm will continue to improve the site for wildlife in the area and install bat boxes.
It also intends to use a local company for the works, employ local staff and supply produce to the Manx public.
