The first copper lines were installed on the Island in the 1920s.
Manx Telecom says copper can 'no longer keep up with the speed and reliability needed in today's world'.
The project is expected to be complete by 2029 but Manx Telecom has already faced challenges securing planning approval for telegraph poles.

The switch-off of the copper network will happen in 'zones'.
Zones 1 and 2 (Foxdale, Kirk Michael, St John's) will be the first.
People living in each zone will be given 12 months' notice to make changes with their provider who will contact them to inform them off their switch-off date.
