Adaption of Hall Caine novel a big hit in 1908
A play based on a fraught love triangle in the town of Ramsey opened on this day in 1908 at the Lyceum Theatre in London.
Renowned novelist Hall Caine's adapted his popular book 'The Manxman' for the stage, into the play 'Pete: A Drama in Four Acts', making several major plot changes.
The drama depicts a struggle between half brothers, one a Deemster, the other a fisherman, for the affections of a local girl.
The production was met with rave reviews by Edwardian audiences during its run on the West End, and was even performed in New York.
