Taxpayers won’t be told how much it cost to settle Covid prisoners' human rights claims

DHA refuses to reveal information after settling out of court

Details of how much taxpayers’ money was spent settling claims concerning human rights breaches at the prison during the Coronavirus pandemic won’t be made public.

The Department of Home Affairs has refused to reveal how much it paid to four claimants after settling their cases out of court.

It’s confirmed it made ‘modest payments’ in ‘the name of the public interest’.

The DHA says four cases were agreed on a ‘no admission’ basis but adds it is unable to release details because of non-disclosure agreements in place.

Manx Radio had asked government for the information.

A spokesperson for the department added: "It is of the view of the department that the settlement represented good value for money against the costs of a contested hearing where each of the additional claimants were also publicly funded."
